AFRICAN REGIONAL ORGANISATION OF THE
INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION Creating a better world for workers in Africa and beyond

Your Eminence,
It is with a deeply heavy heart and in a spirit of global mourning that the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) conveys our profound condolences to the Holy See, the Catholic Church, and all people of goodwill on the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

The world has lost not only a spiritual leader but also a moral compass whose life bore powerful witness to the Gospel of the Poor. From the first moments of his papacy, Pope Francis redefined leadership by walking alongside the marginalised, amplifying the voices of workers, and embracing the dignity of migrants and refugees — those forced to leave their homes in search of a better life. In them, he saw not strangers, but Christ Himself.

His Holiness stood as a prophetic voice in a time of profound global inequality. He spoke truth to power with clarity and courage, warning against an “economy that kills” and calling instead for an economy of solidarity — one that places human dignity above profit. His encyclicals and messages continuously lifted the plight of workers, especially the working poor and those in precarious and informal employment. He reminded us, time and again, that labour is sacred and that every person has the right to decent work and social justice.

In Africa, where so many continue to struggle with poverty, conflict, and displacement, Pope Francis’s words and actions resonated deeply. His commitment to justice offered consolation, and his vision of fraternity inspired action.

To the Catholic faithful, to our comrades in the labour movement, and to all who believe in the inherent dignity of every human being, we say: this is a loss we feel deeply. But in our sorrow, we find strength in his example — and we recommit ourselves to the causes he so assionately
championed.

We pray that the soul of His Holiness rests in eternal peace, and we give thanks for his life, which was truly spent in the service of God and humanity.

In grief, hope, and solidarity,
Joel Akhator Afolabi Odigie
General Secretary, ITUC-Africa
