Stop the War – Protect Workers – Defend Peace
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
ITUC-AFRICA is organising a global day of action to call for and draw attention to the need to halt the war in Sudan and to support humanitarian aid mobilisation and deployment. We are happy that the African Rising Movement that has ITUC-AFRICA as one of its founding members has made a similar call, which ITUC-AFRICA will gladly integrate into what we are planning.
Why Sudan Matters to All African Workers
The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has evolved into one of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophes :
• Nearly 16 million displaced people – the largest displacement crisis globally
• Over 30 million people requiring urgent emergency assistance
• Total collapse of health, education, and economic systems
• Widespread atrocities: sexual violence, mass killings, ethnic cleansing
• Trade unionists targeted for defending democracy and workers’ rights
This is not only a Sudanese tragedy – it is an African crisis. External actors are pouring weapons and funds into the conflict, transforming Sudan into a proxy battlefield where workers, women, youth, and families pay the highest price.

Sudan’s war is destroying lives, democracy, and the dreams of millions of young Africans. It threatens regional stability, fuels mass displacement, and sustains one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. On 2 December, let us show that African workers stand united for peace, dignity, and humanity.
In solidarity,
