AFRICAN REGIONAL ORGANISATION OF THE
INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION Creating a better world for workers in Africa and beyond

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Following the International Trade Union Confederation’s global call to action, ITUC-Africa stands in solidarity with the worldwide trade union movement to demand peace, disarmament, and human security during UNIONS FOR PEACE Week (24-30 October 2025), coinciding with UN Disarmament Week.

Why This Matters for African Workers?
Our continent knows too well the devastating cost of conflict and militarization. From the ongoing tragedies in Sudan, the Sahel region, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Horn of Africa, to the historical scars of armed conflicts across our continent, African workers and their families bear the heaviest burden of war.

While conflicts rage and military budgets expand, our people face:
• Mass unemployment, particularly among youth
• Collapsing public services in health and education
• Forced displacement and migration
• Destruction of workplaces and livelihoods
• Erosion of democratic spaces and workers’ rights
• Diversion of resources from development to armaments
• We know that the money spent on weapons is money stolen from hospitals, schools, decent jobs, and social protection. We know that peace is not just the absence of war— it is the presence of justice, democracy, and decent work for all.

What Your Union Can Do (24-30 October 2025)
We urge all affiliated organisations to take visible action during UNIONS FOR PEACE Week. Your actions should complement and amplify the continental initiatives above.

This week is an opportunity for African trade unions to demonstrate our principled stance : we reject war, violence, and militarization. We demand that governments prioritize human security through decent jobs, quality public services, social protection, and sustainable development.

In solidarity,
