On behalf of the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa), I convey our profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the family of Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, and the entire Nigerian trade union movement following his passing.
Comrade Ugboaja was a distinguished trade unionist, lawyer and organiser who devoted more than three decades to advancing workers’ rights and social justice. From his service within NUCFRLANMPE to his leadership as General Secretary of the NLC, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to strengthening trade union organisation, defending workers and advancing the interests of working people.
His passing is a painful loss not only to the NLC and Nigeria but also to the African trade union movement. We shall remember him as a committed comrade whose experience, leadership and contribution enriched our collective struggle for decent work, dignity and social justice.
During this difficult period, ITUC-Africa stands in solidarity with the NLC, his colleagues, comrades and loved ones.
May the strength of the movement he served so faithfully provide comfort, and may his legacy continue to inspire the struggle for a fairer and more just society.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Yours fraternally,
*Comrade Akhator Joel Odigie
