The African regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (www.ituc-africa.org) extends its deepest solidarity to the people of Morocco, our brother and sister workers, and the trade union movement during this time of devastating floods.
We are deeply saddened by the catastrophic flooding that has displaced over 140,000 people across Morocco’s northwest provinces, particularly in Larache and surrounding areas. The images of families, including children and elderly citizens, trapped on rooftops awaiting rescue, have moved us profoundly.
We commend the courage and dedication of rescue workers, including the Royal Gendarmerie, emergency responders, and all those working tirelessly to save lives and provide relief to affected communities. These workers embody the spirit of solidarity and service that defines the labour movement.
ITUC-Africa stands with the displaced families who have lost their homes and livelihoods, and workers in affected areas who face uncertainty about their jobs and economic security. Our thoughts are with our trade union comrades who are supporting their members and communities during this crisis
We call on the international community, regional organizations, and all people of goodwill to support Morocco’s relief and recovery efforts. Climate-related disasters underscore our shared vulnerability and the urgent need for collective action.
Africa continues to experience and document tragedies from avoidable climate-change induced crisis such as this recent one in Morocco. Sadder, more avoidable climate change-related disasters will continue to occur if swift, pragmatic action is not taken. More than ever, Africa must be supported to deepen its climate change mitigation, adaptation, and Just Transition capabilities.
Once again, our condolences to the Moroccan families that lost loved ones, and we pray for the quick recovery of the injured. We salute and commend the Moroccan government for its search, rescue, and recovery efforts. We remain steadfast in our resolve to collaborate with African governments to prevent climate-related tragedies and promote a green lifestyle culture.
In solidarity,
Signed in Lomé, Togo, on 3 February 2026
