AFRICAN REGIONAL ORGANISATION OF THE
INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION Creating a better world for workers in Africa and beyond

It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Comrade Andrew Mtagwaba Kailembo, former General Secretary of ICFTU-AFRO (African Regional Organisation of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions). He passed away on 6 March 2026 in his hometown of Bokoba, Tanzania.

Comrade Kailembo served as General Secretary of ICFTU-AFRO from 1993 to 2007, guiding the organisation with dedication and vision until its historic merger with DOAWTU (Democratic Organisation of African Workers’ Trade Unions) in Accra, Ghana, in 2007, which gave birth to the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa). Following this important transition, he continued to support the new organisation for an additional year, serving as Advisor to the General Secretary of ITUC-Africa.

Among his notable contributions was the establishment of the ICFTU-AFRO headquarters in Nairobi in 1993, an achievement that laid a solid institutional foundation for the organisation’s development and long-term success. He will also be remembered for his strong commitment to trade union unity across Africa. His efforts to strengthen solidarity among workers contributed significantly to the historic process that brought together ICFTU-AFRO and DOAWTU, culminating in the creation of ITUC-Africa in Accra in November 2007.
Comrade Andrew Kailembo was not only a highly respected trade union leader across the continent but also a trusted mentor and guide to many within the organisation. His professionalism, dedication, and constant support for staff and affiliates left a lasting mark on the institution and its culture.

With his passing, the African trade union movement has lost one of its most respected and visionary leaders. He personified the ideals of ICFTU-AFRO’s mission to advance the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of African workers. His vision of a stronger, united, and more effective trade union movement will continue to inspire generations of trade unionists throughout Africa and beyond.

Comrade Kailembo was a courageous and principled trade unionist who remained closely connected to grassroots workers and tirelessly advocated for their rights and dignity across the continent. His leadership was particularly remarkable during a time when many African countries were governed by military or single-party regimes, when defending workers’ rights demanded exceptional courage and determination.

In addition to raising his voice against serious violations of workers’ rights through strong public statements and protest letters, he frequently travelled to the countries concerned. Through these missions, he boldly challenged injustice and ensured that the voice of the free and democratic trade union movement was heard and respected.

As we mourn his passing, we also honour the enduring legacy he left behind within ICFTU-AFRO and the broader African labour movement. On behalf our teeming members and partners, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones—especially his spouse, Mrs. Caroline Kailembo, and their children—during this difficult time. His memory will remain cherished and his contributions will not be forgotten. May the departed soul of our comrade and brother rest in peace and power.
