The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) expresses deep concern over the unfolding political crisis in Madagascar following the military’s seizure of power.
We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the workers and people of Madagascar, who have long endured economic hardship, governance failures, and political exclusion. The legitimate grievances expressed by citizens—especially the youth, through their protest actions—reflect deep frustrations with unemployment, inequality, and the erosion of democratic accountability. These voices of dissent were calls for reform and renewal, not an invitation for military intervention.
It is therefore deeply regrettable that the Malagasy military has chosen to exploit this moment of civic expression to impose itself as a de facto authority. Such actions constitute a betrayal of public trust and smack of opportunism, undermining the people’s aspirations for democratic and participatory good governance.
ITUC-Africa firmly believes that the military must take full responsibility to return Madagascar to civilian rule immediately. The role of the armed forces in a democracy is to defend the nation and its people—not to usurp their sovereignty. The continuation of military control can only deepen divisions, worsen instability, and weaken the protection of workers’ rights.
We call for:
1. The restoration of constitutional order and the reinstatement of democratic institutions through an inclusive and time-bound transition process.
2. The protection of human and trade-union rights, including freedom of association, assembly, and expression.
3. Constructive dialogue among political actors, civil society, and trade unions to forge a national consensus for peace and reform.
The military must recognise its moral and political imperative to step back and allow the people of Madagascar to determine their future through democratic means. ITUC-Africa stands in solidarity with the Malagasy trade union movement and all citizens committed to restoring democracy, peace, and social justice.
For democracy, workers’ rights, and peace in Madagascar.
