The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) is organising on 23-24 September 2013 in Accra, Ghana, a planning workshop for the Steering Group of the Trade Union Development Cooperation Network.
This workshop is a follow-up to the regional seminar which took place in June 2013 in Lome and which developed a trade union roadmap at the regional and national levels. The roadmap which fits into the logic of the MDGs enabled African countries to identify the priorities of the new post-2015 development framework.
As the global economy continues to recover from the economic and financial crises, a multipolar economy emerges. Donors from the South are playing a more important role in development cooperation although it is different from the traditional North-South cooperation. New emerging actors, the private sector and private philanthropic organizations, civil society organizations and local authorities are also becoming influential players in this area.
It is in this perspective that the United Nations has launched a project to support national consultations on the post-2015 development framework in order to involve stakeholders in one hundred developing countries. These discussions at country level will be supplemented by eleven thematic consultations that are currently underway with the effective participation of civil society organizations and other international organizations.
The African Regional Organization of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) has pointed out that most of the policies and strategies implemented on the continent do not make it possible to initiate development and are not in harmony with the realities facing the people.
That is why the Trade Union Development Cooperation Network (TUDCN) is poised to reflect on the situation and to make proposals to ensure effective development in the world and strengthen the capacity of trade unions to improve their participation in the planning workshop on development effectiveness at international, regional and national level.
It is against this background and in order to adequately prepare the unions to take part in the national debates and consultations on the orientation of development policies in their countries that ITUC, the TUDCN and ITUC-Africa are planning a regional meeting for ITUC-Africa’s affiliates under the theme "Development cooperation in Africa in the context of the post-2015 development prospects: issues and challenges for the African trade union movement ".
This workshop aims to sensitize the participants on the themes which are part of the post-2015 development framework and to develop trade union strategies to ensure an active participation and the effective involvement of ITUC-Africa’s affiliates in national consultations on the post-2015 development agenda. Proposals are going to be made on the strategic orientation of a new development paradigm for Africa and the vision of the African trade union movement is going to be highlighted.
