The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa, www.ituc-africa.org ), representing over 18 million workers across the African continent, unequivocally supports the position of the African Union Commission reaffirming the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
ITUC-Africa strongly condemns any external attempt to recognise Somaliland as an independent state, including reported actions by the Government of Israel. Such moves directly contradict the Constitutive Act of the African Union, the historic 1964 OAU decision on the intangibility of borders inherited at independence, and Africa’s long-standing collective political consensus.
At this critical juncture, Somalia must be allowed the political space to rebuild itself—to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, restore livelihoods, and advance inclusive governance for its people. Reopening border disputes or promoting a non-existent two-state narrative, particularly when encouraged by external actors, risks diverting Somalia from reconstruction toward renewed division and instability at a time when unity is essential for sustainable peace.
ITUC-Africa views the reported position of Israel as foreign interference in African affairs, driven by geopolitical calculations rather than the wellbeing of African peoples. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pronouncement is an irritable distraction, and African workers condemns this dangerous political stunt.
As the collective voice of African workers, ITUC-Africa stands for African unity, peace, and sovereignty. Africa’s reconstruction and development will not be achieved through division, but through genuine hard work and partnership, unity and solidarity, respect for international law, and unwavering commitment to African-led solutions.
Africa is sovereign. Somalia is one.
Signed in Lome, Togo on the 29th of December 2025.
Akhator Joel Odigie, General Secretary, ITUC-Africa.
