The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa www.ituc-africa.org) is shocked by the attacks on Brazil’s Parliament and the Supreme Court by far-right rioters. These attacks took place on Sunday, the 8th of January, 2023.
ITUC-Africa strongly condemns these attacks following the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The attacks, which were orchestrated by defeated President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters, have the potential to undermine the rule of law and fan violence and chaos across the country.
ITUC-Africa is particularly concerned about reports that elements within the security forces stood by and even encouraged the rioters. This is dangerous and unacceptable, and we condemn actions to plunge Brazil into lawlessness.
ITUC-Africa calls on the authorities in Brazil to take all necessary measures to restore order and protect the safety and rights of all citizens. We also call on President Lula da Silva to take a strong stand against these attacks and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
ITUC-Africa stands in solidarity with the working class and all the people of Brazil in their efforts to build a just and more inclusive democratic society. We will continue to monitor the situation and support the efforts of the government, workers and people of Brazil to defend and strengthen their democracy and freedom
